Spain Train Crash Kills 69; 15 Patients Remain Critical
Emiliano Garcia-Page, president of the Castilla-La Mancha region, announced that rescuers had recovered one more body from the crash site. Of the injured, 50 remain in hospitals across the region, while 60 others have been released, he said.
Fifteen patients are classified as “code red,” Garcia-Page said. Four of them are showing signs of improvement.
Authorities do not expect to find further victims, but Garcia-Page warned against assuming the search is over. Crews are still combing through the twisted remains of the worst-damaged carriages.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez addressed reporters after a meeting at the 112 emergency center in Toledo. He said “the entire state is fully mobilized” on three fronts: the emergency response, including rescuing and identifying victims; establishing what caused the crash; and ensuring the central government compensates victims’ families, “at least in material terms.”
