NYC Shipyard Blast Kills 1, Wounds Over 30 in Staten Island

(MENAFN) At least one person was killed and more than 30 others were injured Friday after a devastating fire and explosion tore through a dry dock facility in New York City, local media reported, citing statements from police and fire officials.

The incident unfolded at a shipyard along Richmond Terrace in the Mariners Harbor neighborhood of Staten Island, triggering a mass emergency response.

The Fire Department of New York confirmed it received distress calls during the afternoon reporting a fire originating in the basement of a metal structure situated behind a row of shipping docks, with multiple workers reported to be trapped inside.

Media reported that a major explosion erupted later in the afternoon while firefighters were actively working to contain the flames.

At a press conference, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed that the blaze had been brought under control, announcing that one civilian had lost their life in the incident and that two firefighters remained in critical but stable condition.

The Fire Department disclosed that at least 13 firefighters were among those who sustained injuries — two with serious wounds, two with moderate injuries, and several others with minor injuries. Two emergency medical service workers also sustained minor injuries.

Fire officials confirmed that two individuals were pulled from the scene and rushed to nearby medical facilities.

Media, citing law enforcement sources, reported that at least one worker may remain unaccounted for. Several firefighters issued mayday calls during the battle against the blaze, though all were subsequently located and are currently receiving medical attention.

The origin of the fire and explosion has not yet been determined.
