Trump Says Iran Diplomacy Gets Final Chance as Talks Reach “Final Stages”

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that diplomatic efforts aimed at reaching a long-term settlement with Iran will be given what he described as a final opportunity, as negotiations reportedly enter their closing stages.

Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews before departing for Connecticut, Trump said he is not rushing decisions but wants to avoid further loss of life as tensions remain high.

"We're going to give this one shot. I'm in no hurry. You never think, 'Oh, the midterms, I'm in a hurry.' I'm in no hurry. I just, ideally, I'd like to see few people killed, as opposed to a lot," he said.

According to reports, Trump also questioned Iran’s leadership and suggested that domestic unrest was growing due to worsening living conditions.

"I just wonder whether or not they have the good of the people, because some of the things they're doing, to me, means they don't have the good of the people, and they have to have the good of the people. There's a lot of anger now in Iran, because people are living so badly," he added.

Separately, according to reports, Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi arrived in Tehran for his second visit in less than a week, meeting Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni as part of ongoing diplomatic contacts.

Reports indicate that Pakistan has played a mediating role in efforts aimed at reducing tensions in the wider conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

The latest escalation traces back to February 28, when strikes by the United States and Israel triggered retaliatory missile and drone attacks from Iran and led to major regional disruptions, including the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
