Spain Calls On EU to Shield ICC from Coercion Over Gaza Stance
(MENAFN) Spain's Prime Minister called on the European Commission Wednesday to deploy a key trade defense mechanism to safeguard the independence of the International Criminal Court and the United Nations against external pressure over their efforts to address the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
"We ask the Commission to activate the Anti-Coercion Instrument, to protect the independence of the International Criminal Court and the United Nations, and their actions to end the genocide in Gaza," Pedro Sanchez said on US social media company X.
Sanchez declared that Spain will "not look the other way" on the matter, cautioning that penalizing those who uphold international justice undermines the entire architecture of the global human rights system.
The EU cannot remain a bystander "in the face of this persecution," he added.
According to Gaza's Health Ministry, the Israeli army has killed more than 72,600 people — the majority of them women and children — and wounded over 172,000 others since launching its military campaign in Gaza in October 2023.
Despite a ceasefire that has nominally been in effect since last October, Israel has refused to permit the agreed volumes of humanitarian aid to enter the territory. Roughly 2.4 million Palestinians — including approximately 1.5 million who have been displaced — continue to endure severe and worsening humanitarian conditions inside the enclave.
