Fire on S. Korean Cargo Ship in Strait of Hormuz Put Out

(MENAFN) According to reports, a fire that broke out on a South Korean-operated bulk carrier in the Strait of Hormuz has been successfully extinguished, with no injuries reported among the crew.

The incident occurred late Monday while the vessel was anchored near the United Arab Emirates. The blaze reportedly began in the ship’s engine room following an explosion, prompting the crew to activate onboard fire suppression systems. The fire was brought under control after several hours of efforts by those on board.

All 24 crew members—consisting of South Korean nationals and other international sailors—were confirmed safe following the incident.

The exact cause of the explosion remains unclear and is currently under investigation. The shipping company stated that it is not yet known whether the incident resulted from a technical malfunction or an external factor.

Authorities are also reviewing the vessel’s condition, and plans are underway to tow the ship to Dubai for a detailed inspection and damage assessment.

Separate reports indicated that the vessel was operating in a high-risk maritime zone where security concerns have increased in recent months. Several commercial ships have remained in the area amid heightened regional tensions affecting navigation routes.

The situation unfolds alongside broader instability in the region’s waterways, where security incidents and competing claims about maritime activity have contributed to uncertainty for commercial shipping operators.

Overall, investigations are ongoing, and officials have not yet determined the precise cause of the explosion and fire.
