US Court Blocks Indefinite Immigration Detention Without Bond Hearings
The unanimous decision by a three-judge panel—including one judge appointed by President Donald Trump—found that the government’s interpretation of its detention authority would have far-reaching and damaging consequences for the immigration system and society more broadly.
“The government’s interpretation…would send a seismic shock through our immigration detention system and society, straining our already overcrowded detention infrastructure, incarcerating millions, separating families, and disrupting communities," the panel wrote.
The ruling comes amid increased scrutiny of immigration detention centers run by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), where concerns have been raised about overcrowding and worsening conditions.
US Representative Pramila Jayapal welcomed the court’s decision, describing it as an important step in upholding constitutional protections for immigrants.
She also highlighted a sharp increase in detention numbers under the administration, noting that the detained population reached 70,000 people on a single day in January.
Jayapal further pointed to reports of poor conditions in detention facilities, including insufficient food and water, limited medical care, and overcrowding issues.
The ruling is expected to intensify ongoing political and legal debates over the scope of federal immigration enforcement powers and detainee rights.
