US Navy Secretary Steps Down Amid Ongoing Regional Tensions
In a statement, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said Phelan was “departing the administration” effective immediately. He added that Undersecretary Hung Cao will assume the role of acting Navy secretary.
“On behalf of the Secretary of War and Deputy Secretary of War, we are grateful to Secretary Phelan for his service to the Department and the United States Navy. We wish him well in his future endeavors,” Parnell said.
No further explanation was given for the sudden exit, and the announcement was later shared without additional comment by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Phelan, who came from a business and investment background without prior military service, had been serving as the 79th Secretary of the Navy since March 25, 2025, following his nomination by President Donald Trump. His tenure lasted just over a year.
The leadership change comes at a time of heightened US naval activity in the Middle East, where tensions remain elevated, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, despite ongoing ceasefire efforts and stalled diplomatic negotiations.
