UN Issues Warning Over Surge in Peacekeeper Deaths

(MENAFN) The UN peacekeeping chief issued stark warnings Thursday regarding an "increasingly dangerous environment" confronting peacekeepers worldwide, highlighting recent fatalities and mounting operational hazards.

Jean-Pierre Lacroix revealed that five peacekeepers deployed with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) have been killed in recent weeks, underscoring intensifying dangers threatening UN personnel.

Peacekeepers continue executing missions amid volatile circumstances while striving to safeguard civilians and preserve stability across conflict-affected territories, Lacroix noted.

Addressing Lebanon's security situation, Lacroix declared that Israeli military presence on Lebanese soil represents "a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701."

He emphasized that enduring solutions cannot emerge from military operations alone, requiring instead political agreements executed by Lebanese governmental authorities with international community backing. "Israel will have to do what it takes to create the space and the political and practical and security conditions for that to happen," he insisted.

Lacroix additionally cautioned that peacekeeping missions face crippling financial constraints, with liquidity crises compelling drastic capacity reductions.

Operations have already slashed approximately 25% of operational capabilities due to delayed or incomplete member state contributions, he disclosed.

These cutbacks produce tangible consequences, including weakened civilian protection measures and diminished incident response capacity, Lacroix observed.

He warned that without financial improvements, peacekeeping operations risk reaching critical thresholds where mandated responsibilities may become impossible to fulfill.
