Trump Issues 90-Day Extension of Jones Act Waiver

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has signed a 90-day extension to the Jones Act waiver, permitting foreign vessels to transport oil between domestic ports as his administration pushes to drive down fuel prices nationwide.

White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers confirmed the move on X, stating: "President Trump issued a 90-day extension to the Jones Act waiver. New data compiled since the initial waiver was issued revealed that significantly more supply was able to reach U.S. ports faster."

Rogers further defended the decision, saying: "This waiver extension provides both certainty and stability for the U.S. and global economies. The Trump Administration has taken several actions to mitigate short-term disruptions to the energy markets, and this extension will help ensure vital energy products, industrial materials, and agricultural necessities are maintained."

The Jones Act — a century-old federal statute dating to 1920 — mandates that all cargo shipped between U.S. ports be transported exclusively aboard American-built, American-owned, and American-crewed vessels. Waivers to the law are rare and typically reserved for emergency circumstances.

Trump first granted a 60-day waiver on March 18, responding to mounting fuel price pressures tied to the Iran war, with the goal of unclogging domestic supply lines and steadying energy markets.

The newly approved extension takes effect at 12:00 a.m. Eastern Time — 05:00 GMT — on May 18, keeping the waiver active through at minimum August. The White House confirmed the extension was announced ahead of schedule to give the maritime industry sufficient time to plan and adjust logistically.
