Australia Unemployment Rate Holds at 4.3 Percent in March
Employment rose modestly during the month, with 17,900 additional people finding work, while the number of unemployed declined by 3,700. This left the national jobless rate unchanged for a second straight month.
Earlier in the day, media reported that economists had projected a steady unemployment rate of 4.3 percent alongside job gains of around 25,000.
In a media statement, Sean Crick, head of labor statistics, said in a media release that the growth in employment was primarily driven by full-time workers.
Data from the ABS showed full-time employment surged by 52,500 between February and March. However, this increase was partly offset by a drop of 34,600 in part-time roles.
The shift toward full-time positions contributed to a 0.5 percent rise in total hours worked nationwide, reaching 2.01 billion hours.
Meanwhile, the participation rate — a key measure of workforce engagement — edged down slightly, slipping from 66.9 percent in February to 66.8 percent in March.
March marks the first full reporting period since the onset of the U.S.-Iran conflict. However, Ryan Wells of Westpac told media that it was too early for any spillover effects to be reflected in employment data.
