Iran Pursues Accountability Against U.S., Israel
Speaking in an interview with Russian a state news agency, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei framed the issue as one that transcends Tehran's borders, casting it as a challenge to the entire international order.
"We must do this. And I think not only Iran but the entire international community is demanding accountability," Baqaei said. "Because what the US and Israel have done is a crime against international peace and security. It's a war crime, a crime against humanity."
Baqaei grounded his accusations in established international legal frameworks, pointing to the Geneva Conventions and stressing that all states carry a binding obligation to uphold and enforce international humanitarian law.
"Since the atrocities committed by the US and Israel violate these principles, I believe all UN member states must call for the US and Israel to be held accountable," he said.
The spokesman further signaled that Tehran intends to exhaust every available legal avenue, vowing to utilize the "entire domestic system, as well as international law, to hold them accountable for the horrific crimes they have committed against the Iranian people."
The statements come against a backdrop of staggering losses. More than 3,300 people have been killed in joint US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran since February 28 — a toll that includes then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. A two-week ceasefire brokered by Pakistan briefly paused hostilities last week, followed by rare direct talks between Washington and Tehran on Pakistani soil over the weekend. Those negotiations, however, concluded without any agreement, leaving the path forward deeply uncertain.
