UK PM Urges Social Media Firms to Improve Child Online Safety
Writing on the US platform X, Starmer said, “I know parents are worried about social media and its impact on their children’s safety. They rightly expect fast action. Today, I’m calling on senior leaders from X, Meta, Snap, YouTube and TikTok to step up.”
He also pledged to do “whatever it takes” to ensure children are kept safe in digital environments.
His comments came as his office announced plans for him to meet with leaders from major tech companies later in the day to push for progress on what it described as one of the most urgent issues affecting children today.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, Starmer is expected to emphasize that “looking the other way is not an option.”
The statement added that the prime minister has made clear that protecting young people online is not a matter of whether the government will act, but how it will do so.
It also said Starmer will outline the government’s principles and expectations during the meeting, while pressing tech companies for clearer answers on their efforts to safeguard children and address concerns raised by families.
