Germany Calls on Iran to End Nuclear Military Program

(MENAFN) Germany on Monday called on Iran to verifiably dismantle its military nuclear program and bring its ballistic missile arsenal to heel, staking out a firm position as diplomatic efforts over Tehran's nuclear ambitions continue.

Government spokesman Stefan Kornelius, speaking at a press briefing, laid out Berlin's conditions for any viable diplomatic resolution. "Any diplomatic solution requires Iran to verifiably stop its military nuclear program. No ballistic missiles may be launched from Iran against Israel and the Gulf states, and destabilizing activities in the region must cease," Kornelius said. "The ballistic missile program must be brought under control," he added.

Tehran, for its part, has long rejected characterizations of its nuclear activities as militarily driven, insisting the program serves strictly peaceful, civilian energy purposes — a position that has done little to quiet mounting international concern over its high-level uranium enrichment. Ongoing negotiations have stalled over Iran's insistence on preserving its enrichment capabilities while simultaneously pursuing sanctions relief.

The missile question adds another layer of complexity. Iran's ballistic missile arsenal forms a cornerstone of its defense doctrine, and its leadership has made clear the program is off the table in any talks. Earlier this month, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi declared that Tehran's missile capabilities are "not subject to negotiations now or in the future," framing them as a purely "defensive matter."

The arsenal itself has been significantly depleted. Before last year's 12-day war with Israel, Iran's ballistic missile stockpile was estimated at between 2,500 and 3,000 units. Analysts now believe that figure was cut by approximately half during the conflict — a significant reduction that nonetheless leaves Tehran with a formidable inventory and an unwavering intent to rebuild.
