White House Confirms US Helped Mexico Target ‘El Mencho’
"The United States provided intelligence support to the Mexican government in order to assist with an operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco, Mexico, in which Nemesio ‘El Mencho’ Oseguera Cervantes, an infamous drug lord and leader within the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, was eliminated," spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said on a US social media platform.
Leavitt described ‘El Mencho’ as a "top target" for both Mexico and the US, noting his role as one of the leading traffickers of fentanyl into the United States. She added that President Donald Trump had designated the CJNG as a foreign terrorist organization last year.
"In this operation, three additional cartel members were killed, three were wounded, and two were arrested," she said, while also praising the Mexican military for their cooperation and successful execution of the mission.
US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, who previously served as ambassador to Mexico, welcomed the operation, calling it a "great development" for Mexico, the US, and the wider Latin American region.
The operation sparked immediate violent reactions, including road blockades, vehicle burnings, and armed clashes across several states where the CJNG operates, such as Tamaulipas, Michoacan, and Nayarit. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum urged the public to remain calm in response to the unrest caused by the operation.
