Benfica-Real Madrid Match Stopped Amid Claimed Racist Abuse Toward Vinicius
The incident took place in the second half at Estadio da Luz, shortly after Vinicius scored in the 50th minute to give Real Madrid a 1-0 lead. He had also received a yellow card for excessive celebration near the corner flag.
Following a brief exchange with Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni, Vinicius approached French referee Francois Letexier. Letexier used the crossed-arms gesture, the standard UEFA signal for racist abuse, before Vinicius left the field, accompanied by his Real Madrid teammates.
Both teams’ players and coaching staff engaged in discussions during the stoppage, and Benfica manager Jose Mourinho was seen speaking with Vinicius as tensions escalated.
The match resumed roughly 10 minutes later after the interruption.
