Man Gets Arrested at US Capitol While Approaching with Loaded Shotgun
US Capitol Police Chief Michael Sullivan reported that the individual, whose identity has not been released, exited a white Mercedes-Benz SUV shortly after noon local time (1700 GMT) and was immediately confronted by officers on site. He complied when ordered to drop the firearm.
"He laid down the weapon and then laid down on the ground and was taken into custody by our US Capitol Police officers," Sullivan said. "Who knows what would have happened if we didn't have officers here standing guard like they do every single day."
The suspect was wearing a tactical vest and gloves, and officers found a Kevlar helmet and gas mask inside his vehicle. Additional ammunition was also discovered on his person.
Authorities are investigating the individual’s motives, including whether he intended to target members of Congress. The suspect, an 18-year-old, had no prior known interactions with law enforcement, Sullivan added.
