IOM urges immediate aid for civilians in Sudan war

(MENAFN) The International Organization for Migration (IOM) called on Monday for urgent international support for millions of civilians affected by Sudan’s ongoing conflict between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

IOM Director General Amy Pope arrived in Sudan to assess the humanitarian response and emphasized the scale of the crisis. “Over 30 million people need help. Nearly 10 million are displaced inside the country,” she said on X, the US social media platform.

Since April 15, 2023, Sudan’s army and the RSF have been engaged in a deadly conflict that regional and international mediation efforts have so far failed to resolve. The situation worsened last month when the RSF captured El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, reportedly committing ethnic-based massacres, according to local and international organizations.

Humanitarian conditions remain dire. The Tawila Emergency Room, a local relief committee in North Darfur, reported a fire east of the Dali camp that destroyed the belongings of displaced civilians, and appealed to aid agencies for immediate assistance.

With El-Fasher’s fall, the RSF now controls all five Darfur states, while the army retains control over most of Sudan’s remaining 13 states, including the capital, Khartoum. Although Darfur constitutes about one-fifth of Sudan’s territory, most of the country’s 50 million people live in army-held areas.
