Russia Accuses EU of Undermining Putin-Trump Summit
According to ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, the European bloc is engaging in “active subversive actions” ahead of the summit, which is scheduled to take place in Budapest, the capital of Hungary.
Zakharova's remarks were in response to an article by a Spanish publication, which described the upcoming talks as “a political nightmare” for Brussels.
The report, based on anonymous diplomatic sources, claimed the EU felt “in an awkward and unpleasant position” due to the fact that discussions about resolving the conflict in Ukraine were set to occur within an EU member state—without the EU's direct involvement.
The spokeswoman criticized what she described as the “aggressive Western European community,” asserting that they aim to “derail any peaceful aspirations” linked to the war.
“We are seeing statements, threats being made,” Zakharova emphasized, pointing to what she perceives as intentional interference by Western actors.
She went on to claim that Western European nations are “obviously” striving to intensify the confrontation between Russia and Ukraine.
Zakharova noted that this approach has been consistent since 2022, when peace negotiations held in Istanbul were allegedly “thwarted” by external influence.
In connection to those failed talks, former Ukrainian chief negotiator David Arakhamia has stated that Ukraine backed out of discussions with Moscow following a visit from then-British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who reportedly urged President Vladimir Zelensky to continue military resistance. However, the ex-UK leader has rejected these allegations.
