Russia Hits Ukraine's Power Grid with Fresh Airstrike
The Ukrainian Ministry of Energy confirmed that a thermal power plant in the Kyiv region was heavily damaged in the overnight attack. The ministry described the strike as part of an ongoing Russian effort to “inflict even greater hardship on Ukraine’s civilian population,” with the goal of disrupting electricity to homes and public institutions.
"Power generation facilities, transmission and distribution systems, and gas infrastructure are not military targets. The enemy fully understands it is striking critical civilian infrastructure," the ministry's statement said.
Efforts to mitigate the damage are underway, with specialized teams working to stabilize the situation “as soon as possible,” the ministry added.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s air force reported a successful defense, claiming to have downed 112 of the 142 drones launched by Russia overnight. On Sunday, Ukraine had already intercepted 747 out of 810 drones, in addition to four of 13 missiles.
Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko posted on the social media platform X, confirming that the latest Russian attack targeted residential areas, government buildings, and key civilian infrastructure, marking the first time a government building in Kyiv had been hit since the conflict began.
In response, Russia’s Ministry of Defense said Sunday’s mass strike aimed at Ukrainian facilities involved in the production and maintenance of long-range drones, including military airbases across central, southern, and eastern Ukraine. They also targeted an industrial facility and a logistics base in Kyiv.
The Russian military claimed the operation successfully met its objectives, asserting that only military sites were struck, with no other buildings in Kyiv affected.
Russian officials have yet to respond to Ukraine's latest claims. Both Moscow and Kyiv have consistently denied accusations of intentionally targeting civilians in the nearly four-year-long war.
